New York Brass Band Live at York Barbican
What a night.
York Barbican gave New York Brass Band a crowd that was up for it from the first note, and we made sure they got their money’s worth. We played all the crowd favourites, the ones you shout for and the ones you sing back at us louder than we can play them. You clapped, you danced, you joined in on every call and response we threw at you, and the room didn’t sit still once.
That kind of energy only works both ways. A brass band is loud, but a full room singing along is louder, and York, you delivered in spades!
The Set: Big Tunes and a Barbican Circle Pit
A highlight of the night was our take on I’m Coming Out. The horns hit, the crowd lost it, and the whole venue was singing with Grace our lead singer.
Then came the crazy insanity that is the Circle Pit. If you’ve been to a New York Brass Band gig before, you know what happens next. If you haven’t, you just gotta picture the York Barbican floor turning into a running track, with hundreds of people charging round in circles while we played them faster and faster. MESSY!
For the finale, we left the stage behind (ok we might have left John still playing the drums) and played it from the middle of the crowd. No barrier, no distance, just a brass band surrounded by the people who made the night what it was. It’s our favourite way to finish, and York made it one to remember.
One More for the Road with Hyde Family Jam
Playing our own set would have been enough. But we weren’t done.
To close the night, we joined our busker friends Hyde Family Jam on stage for an end of night gig. Two bands, one stage, and a crowd that somehow still had more to give – all the brass, guitars, double bass and violin you can ask for. It was loose, it was loud, and it was exactly the kind of collaboration we love doing. Huge thanks to Hyde Family Jam, and to York Barbican for a cracking night – not to mention all you lovely people who crammed into the venue for a sing and a dance, and then bought t-shirts!
